Our friend from WI, Lucie Hake, started a non-profit organization that collects and sends art work from orphanages, schools and children's homes all over the world, through short term mission trip teams going to various countries. It gives children an opportunity to express themselves through art--something that defies all language barriers. Seeing artwork by other children helps them realize they are not alone in the world and there are children just like them going through similar situations and with the same hopes and dreams around the globe. It is a way of unifying children from different races, cultures, ethnic backgrounds, religions, socio-economic levels, disabilities, etc. I was privileged to do the project with Deaf kids in a Haitian orphanage back in Oct, and now this summer at children's homes here in Uganda & Kenya.
She has started collecting banners made by children from each country as well. Ours had thumbprints of each of the kids inside the symbol for First Love (the name of the children's home).
For the pictures portion, the first thing you do is explain about the organization and the point of the project.
Then I showed them samples of different pictures, the age of the child, read any of the messages on the back, and show them on the map which country it's from.
Afterwards I laid the pictures out on the back table so they could pore over them:
The whole room went quiet as soon as I passed out the crayons, markers, and colored pencils.
They worked on their pictures so earnestly & intently.
Having fun using the flag in creative ways ;)
